Solicitor General (SG) Ranjit Kumar on Tuesday (July 18) handed over to the Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justices J Chelameswar, R K Agrawal, DY Chandrachud and S Abdul Nazeer the names of five eminent doctors who have agreed to be part of the oversight committee of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The apex court had earlier directed the Union government for this list to constitute a committee. The bench asked the SG: “These names are outstanding, but will they be able to give time to this?”

The CJI even made a light-hearted comment: “They have even denied me time.”

The SG assured the bench that they have given their consent.  The oversight committee shall start working forthwith, said the bench. The bench also said that if any person from the list does not want to become part of committee the government can approach the court.

The matter is of the recognition of medical dental colleges.
