ILNS: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday declined the request of the Delhi Waqf Board to allow 50 people to enter the Nizamuddin Markaz to offer prayers on the first day of Ramzan which begins Wednesday (April 14).
The single-judge bench of Justice Mukta Gupta, however, allowed only 5 people to enter the mosque and offer prayers during the holy month.
The bench, however, expressed displeasure over the interview given by Delhi Waqf Board chairman Amanatullah Khan in which he said, “The high court has ordered for reopening of the Markaz mosque.”
While the matter was being heard through videoconferencing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, along with advocate Rajat Nair, appearing for the Central government, said, “The entire human race is currently under an existential crisis.”
Responding to the said submissions, senior advocate Ramesh Gupta said, “My Lords, 35 lakh people took the holy dip during the MahaKumbh recently.”

The court asked Gupta to refrain from such a statement. “It’s not a public platform Mr Gupta, it’s a court of law,” the bench said.
The court has now posted the matter for further hearing on April 15.
