Allahabad High Court issues notice in PIL filed highlighting menace of seized vehicles in some UP police stations

The Allahabad High Court issued notice in a Public Interest Litigation filed highlighting the menace of ever growing stock of the seized vehicles in front of various Police Stations all over the State of Uttar Pradesh.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Ashutosh Srivastava passed this order in suo moto PIL.

This letter petition, which has been registered as a Public Interest Litigation, seeks to highlight the menace of ever growing stock of the seized vehicles in front of various Police Stations all over the State of Uttar Pradesh, causing encroachment on the public road adjoining the Police Stations and turning them into virtually junk yards on account of no place prescribed for proper storage of such vehicles.

The vehicles ending up lying in the Police Stations are the seized vehicles from time to time by the Police either in commission of various offences or abandoned vehicles or vehicles which are recovered during investigation of complaints of theft, accidents etc.

The plea has been substantiated by annexing photographs of the seized vehicles lying in front of Cantonment Police Station at Prayagraj.

It has been submitted by Shubham Agarwal, counsel, pressing the PIL that the same situation prevails in almost all the Police Stations across the State of UP.

Shubham Agarwal further submitted that this menace is required to be checked and some measures are required to be adopted to prevent the piling of such vehicles be it four wheelers or two wheelers from turning into junk and unroadworthy resulting in national wastage.

The Court observed that the matter requires consideration.

The Court issued notice to the State-Respondents and directed to file response to the PIL.

The Court has fixed the next hearing of the petition on 28th November, 2023.
