The Delhi High Court on Monday has deferred a petition of a woman, who had sought police security as she was facing threats on account of her conversion to Islam.

A single-judge bench of Justice Rekha Palli was inclined to dismiss the petition but deferred it as the counsel for the petitioner was unavailable and the proxy counsel was not in a position to assist the court.

Senior Advocate Garima Prasad, appearing on the behalf of the state of Uttar Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh DGP, submitted that there was no question of UP Police threatening the petitioner, further more she stated that the petitioner has not provided any details of the threats made against her.

Advocate Sameer Vashisht, appearing on the behalf of  Delhi Government, submitted that even after repeated attempts of the Delhi Police, the petitioners have failed to provide even a telephone number or e-mail id, let alone the details of threat.

Upon hearing these submission, Justice Palli opined that nothing survived in the petition, but deferred the matter in the interest of justice and listed the matter for hearing on November 10.

According to the petition, Renu Gangwar alias Ayesha Alvi converted to Islam on May 27 in Delhi, and subsequently she started getting calls from mediapersons requesting a meeting which she refused.

The petition alleges that the afore-mentioned mediapersons came to her place without her permission and took her photographs and videos furthermore, she started getting calls threatening that her conversion news will be published in media and she would be arrested and demanded money.

• To direct the authorities to ensure that the woman is not taken away from Delhi by force or coercion by any government agency or person and she and her family be granted protection and not harassed or interrogated regarding her conversion.

• To direct the media not to publish or broadcast any malicious content regarding her and not to divulge her personal details and also remove the contents already shown.
