Delhi HC Seeks Centre’s Response On Plea Seeking Action Against Delhi Police In Jamia Violence Case

The Delhi High Court on Friday has sought a reply from the central government and Delhi police in a petition seeking direction for immediate relief and to take action against police officers who allegedly attacked on the Jamia Millia Islamia University students on 15th December 2019.

A division bench presided by Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan of Delhi High Court while conducting hearing through video conferencing has listed the matter for the further hearing on 5th June 2020.

Violence broke out in South Delhi as police clashed with students and protesters in and around the Jamia Milia Islamia University. The students were protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.

The petition filed by Nabila Hasan sought strict action against the alleged police brutality on the JMI students. This matter has been listed earlier in July.

Whereas, Ms. Nabila sought urgent hearing of the matter because the students have been called by the police for an interrogation session even during the lockdown, was harassed during the interrogation, and were asked to wait for hours unnecessarily.

The petition further stated that “At this juncture, it has become absolutely necessary to prepone the present case.”
