Delhi High Court grants bail to Pinky Irani in money laundering case related to conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar

Former TV anchor Pinky Irani, who was arrested in connection with the Rs 200 crore money laundering case involving conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, got bail from the Delhi High Court on Friday.

The single-judge Bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma granted bail to Irani on personal bond of Rs five lakh and two sureties of the like amount.

In April this year, the counsel representing Irani had contended that the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) had been imposed on her. She was arrested on November 30, 2022 by the PMLA authorities and on the same allegations, MCOCA was also imposed on her.

The counsel said that he would argue on the pure question of law, adding that documents were not required in the case, as it was based on allegations.

He asked whether MCOCA was applicable on Irani or not.

Representing the Delhi Police, Additional Standing Counsel (ASC) Nandita Rao sought four weeks to file a reply to the plea.

She said Irani was a co-accused in the Sukesh Chandrashekhar matter. Considering the  confessional statement, recoveries and other documents which would be brought on record, at least four weeks would be required.

The High Court said that the petitioner sought bail in FIR No. 208/2021. The Counsel had submitted that the trial court had wrongly dismissed the bail application by its impugned order of March 4, 2023. The counsel has submitted that even MCOCA was not attributed in the present case.

Irani, allegedly an aide of conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, had introduced him to actress Jacqueline Fernandes and many other celebrities. She allegedly received crores of rupees from Sukesh for arranging meetings inside Tihar Jail.
