School eviction: Madras HC warns Rajinikanth’s wife Latha could face contempt of court action

The Madras High Court has warned the education association, of which Latha Rajinikanth, the wife of superstar Rajinikanth, is the secretary, that she could face contempt of court if they fail to vacate the premises occupied by their Ashram school by April 2021.

Latha Rajinikanth, secretary of the Sri Raghavendra Education Association, runs the school Ashram in the Guindy area of Chennai. The school is said to have not paid rent for the land owned by Venkateswaralu and Poornachandra Rao.

In this situation, the land owners filed a case in the Madras High Court in 2014 seeking an order to pay rent arrears of Rs 99 lakh till March 2013. While the case was pending, on August 16, 2017, there was a commotion due to the sudden closing of the school gate. The school has since been reopened by court order.

Sri Raghavendra Education Association has agreed to vacate the seat by April 3 this year after the two sides reached an agreement on August 3, 2018 as the rent issue persisted.

In this context, Latha Rajinikanth, the secretary of the association, had filed an additional petition in the High Court on behalf of the landowners seeking an extension of one more year as they could not vacate as promised due to the corona spread.

Earlier, Justice N. Satish Kumar has said that there was an agreement in the contract to vacate the place and the monthly rent was fixed by DTS.

Counsel for Latha Rajinikanth argued that Rs 8 lakh, including the amount, was being paid regularly and therefore the moratorium should be extended till the end of this academic year.

Following this, Justice Satish Kumar issued an order giving Sri Raghavendra Educational Association until April 30 to vacate the building where the Ashram School is functioning in Guindy. The judge warned Latha Rajinikanth that she would face contempt of court if she fails to vacate the Ashram school premises by April 2021.

In addition, the Sri Raghavendra Education Association has been banned from conducting student admissions for 2021-22 at the current address.
