#MeToo: M J Akbar records his statements before court, deems Ramani’s allegations as “defamatory”

M J Akbar on Saturday appeared before the court of the Court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal in connection with his defamation case against journalist Priya Ramani and recorded his statements and was also cross-examined.

In a two-hour hearing, Akbar mentioned about his career and political achievements. Akbar maintained that Ramani allegations have tarnished his image and was “malafide” and “defamatory”.

“I have been harmed by the offensive words used which were false and which caused irreparable damage to my sterling rep which I had built over the years. My complaint is correct and allegations made are false,” said Akbar.

Senior advocate Rebecca John, appearing for Ramani, cross examined Akbar.

John asked Akbar about his political career graph and sought to know whether his switching of parties from Congress to BJP signifies political opportunism.

Akbar answered some of her questions as “I don’t remember”.

The court adjourned the matter to May 20 on Akbar’s counsel but said that Akbar’s cross examination will continue on next hearing.
