Gauhati High Court issues notice in PIL on non-completion of tourism projects in Mizoram

The Gauhati High Court has recently issued notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) over the non-completion of two projects funded under the centrally-sponsored schemes of the Ministry of Tourism.

The PIL is filed by an accredited journalist (Zomuanpuia Kolasib) from the state espousing public interest involved in two projects namely, the construction of Ropeway from Durtlang to Chaltlang, Aizawl, and the Skywalk at Sakawehmuituaitlang, Aizawl, which are funded by the Tourism Ministry’s schemes to help the state in developing tourism facilities.

Rosalynn L Hmar, Counsel for the petitioner, submitted that for construction of the Ropeway and Skywalk, the Government of India, under the Ministry of Tourism, sanctioned a sum of Rs 99 crore during 2014-2015 and the Government of Mizoram, thereafter, allotted the work to the respondents through a limited tender and a Contract Agreement was signed on 30.08.2017.

As per the Agreement, 16-months’ time was given for completing it. The time given for completion of the work has passed but nothing much has been done despite the release of a huge sum of money as mobilisation fund, alleged the counsel for the petitioner.

While considering the PIL, the Aizawl Bench of Justice Songkhupchung Serto and Justice Marli Vankung issued notice to the respondents. The matter will be listed after four weeks.
