Gurmeet Ram Rahim case: Delhi High Court warns YouTuber Shyam Meera Singh of contempt proceedings for tweets against court

The Delhi High Court on Monday expressed disappointment and warned YouTuber Shyam Meera Singh about contempt proceedings against him for the tweets he posted. The High Court was hearing a suit lodged by the Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh seeking an interim stay on streaming of a video and the deletion of a video on YouTube that was uploaded by Singh.

At the beginning of the court proceedings, the counsel appearing for Shyam Meera Singh sought an adjournment as Senior Advocate Salman Khurshid was not present to argue on Monday. Meanwhile, Senior Advocate Mohit Mathur representing the dera Sacha Sauda Chief informed the court that the YouTuber has tweeted that he is being pressurized and quoted his tweet.

The YouTuber tweeted that owing to the opposite party, he has been forced to put the video on private mode for 2 days. Responding to this, the bench of Justice Jasmeet Singh stated that the tweet is unfair, adding that the court does not force anybody. The bench said that putting the video on private mode was a concession. It underlined that the court is competent to pass an order with regards to the merits of the case.

Interacting with Shyam Meera Singh, the court said that the YouTuber should be a responsible citizen, when he writes about the court. The Court further pointed out that it was the YouTuber’s advocate who had suggested putting the video in Private Mode. Additionally, the court warned that if any such tweet is posted in future, then they will issue a contempt order against him.

The Court directed that the video will stay in private mode till January 10. Furthermore, the Delhi High Court adjourned the matter till January 10, mentioning that the senior advocate appearing for Singh was not available.

During the last hearing, Senior Advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for Singh, said that both sides will sit together and see the defamatory portions of the video and see if anything can be done.
