Supreme Court turns down SP leader Azam Khan’s bail plea, tells him to approach Allahabad High Court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down the bail application of Samajwadi party leader Mohammad Azam Khan, asking him to approach the Allahabad High Court, where his bail petition was pending.

A Bench comprising Justice L. Nageswara Rao and Justice B.R. Gavai asked Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Khan, “Why didn’t you go to the High Court?”

Sibal replied, “The matter is being heard in the High Court, but we are not being given a chance.”

Sibal told the Supreme Court that Khan’s bail plea was not being taken up for the past 3-4 months, despite repeated requests for hearing. He said that 87 FIRs have been filed against his client and Khan has got bail in 84 cases.

The Supreme Court said, “You should not do politics here.”

The Apex Court gave this response, when alleged that his client had become a victim of politics.

Azam Khan had moved the Supreme Court, seeking interim bail to participate in the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

In the petition, Khan had alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government was deliberately hanging his case, so that he cannot participate in the election campaign.
