Congress to seek review of Supreme court EWS order

The Supreme Court judgment which upheld the economically weaker sections (EWS) quota while excluding the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and OBCs has been criticised by Congress, which has decided to undertake a review of the same.

The statement for undertaking a review of the EWS quota order by the All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) was welcomed by the Congress leader P Chidambaram.

Speaking about his appreciation, the senior leader P Chidambaram took to Twitter and wrote, “I welcome the statement of the AICC that the party will undertake a review of the judgement of the Supreme Court on the reservation for Economically Weaker Sections.

Talking about the order, the leader said that the exclusion of SC, ST and OBC from the new reservation has caused widespread concern among the people.

The concern on the same arises as per the Sinho Commission, which said that SC, ST and OBC constituted 82 per cent of the population below the poverty line. The poor form a class. Can the law exclude 82 per cent of the poor? This is a question that must be examined objectively and dispassionately.

In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court with 3:2 majority upheld the Constitutional validity of 103rd Amendment which gives 10 percent reservation to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) among the forward castes.

A bench comprising of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit along with Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, Justice S Ravindra Bhat, Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice JB Pardiwala have delivered the order.

Each of the four judges had their own views on the EWS reservation.

The order by the Supreme Court was hailed and celebrated by the ruling BJP, not all opposition parties take a uniform stand for or against the judgment.

There are some parties, which have praised the Supreme Court’s verdict, whereas others which have called it a setback to the struggle for social justice.
