HC decision granting pre-arrest bail to journo in a rape case challenged before SC

Decision granting anticipatory bail to journalist Varun Hiremath in a Rape case lodged against him by a 22-year-old woman has been challenged before the Apex Court. The Delhi High Court Justice Mukta Gupta had granted bail to Journo Varun Hiremath earlier last month.

A bench of Justices Navin Sinha and Ajay Rastogi will hear the plea on June 4, 2021. 

His anticipatory bail application was rejected by Additional Sessions Judge at the Fast Track Courts in Patiala House Court bail earlier this year. 

On the basis of the woman’s complaint, an FIR under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 376 (punishment for rape), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) was registered at the Chanakyapuri Police Station here in Delhi.

The Complainant before the High Court had cited eight major discrepancies in the probe conducted by the Delhi Police. Before the High Court Senior Advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan and Advocate Jai Anand Dehadri appeared for the complainant woman.
