Hike in post-retirement benefits for retired CJIs, SC judges

The Ministry of Law and Justice on Thursday notified an amendment to increase the lifetime monthly payment to retired SC judges, including the Chief Justice of India.

The Central Government through an amendment in Supreme Court Judges Rules, 1959 has increased the post-retirement benefits of Supreme Court judges.

The Ministry of Law and Justice on Thursday notified an amendment to increase the lifetime monthly payment to retired SC judges, including the Chief Justice of India.

According to the Rule 3B of the Supreme Court Judges Rules, a retired CJI is entitled to Rs 25,000 per month during his lifetime. This amount has now been increased to Rs 70,000 per month, as per the Supreme Court Judges(Amendment) Rules 2021 notification.

Similarly, a retired Supreme Court judge was earlier entitled to a lifetime monthly payment of Rs 14,000 which has now been hiked to Rs 39,000 per month.

It is pertinent to note that the Central Government exercise powers conferred by sub-section (1) and clauses (c) and (f) of sub-section (2) of section 24 of the Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Act, 1958 , to make a amendment in Supreme Court Judges Rules, 1959 which was last amended in 2006.
