Kamakhya Devi in Assam is not being maintained properly: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday said the temple of Kamakhya Devi in Assam is not being maintained properly by the authorized people. It also said that when it comes to hygiene there can not be any compromise.

The matter was heard by the bench of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice C T Ravikumar  who hearing a matter relating to the maintenance of the temple.

Justice Rastogi mentioned that he was in Guwahati during the vacations, and is aware of the fact that the maintenance of the temple os not proper. He said he agrees that the temple is not being properly maintained. He also added that this was his personal opinion. There can’t be any compromise on hygiene.

Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, who represented the temple said that this is a case where certain people wrote letters saying hygiene is not being taken care of.

He apprised the court about the development and said that the temple has been taken care of by roping in expert bodies like the Indian Institute of Technology.

The Top court has deferred the matter for hearing in January 2023 to enable a possible amicable solution between the parties.

The top court had in December 2021 disposed of a contempt plea by the elected Dolois (priest) representing members of Bordeuri Samaj of Kamakhya Devalaya alleging misappropriation of funds by the Kamakhya Debutter Board
