SC rejects plea seeking stay on Raj govt’s move to implement 5 per cent quota for Gujjars

The Supreme Court on Friday (April 5) turned down a plea seeking a stay on the Rajasthan govt’s move to implement 5 per cent quota for Gujjar and four other communities.

The CJI headed bench declined it saying that the matter is already pending before Rajasthan High Court.

In February this year, the Rajasthan government had introduced a bill mandating 5 per cent quota for Gujjar and four other communities in jobs and educational institutions.

The other communities on which quota was extended includes Gadia, Lohar, Banjara, Rebari and Gadariya.

The reservation bill came after Gujjars and other communities blocked rail and road traffic in many parts of Rajasthan. The widespread protests were led by Gujjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti chief Col Kirori Singh Bainsla.
