Porn film case: Supreme Court grants bail to Sherlyn Chopra, issues notice to Maharashtra government

The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim protection from arrest to model and actress Sherlyn Chopra, in connection with the porn film racket case.

A Bench comprising Justice Vineet Saran and Justice Aniruddha Bose also issued notice to the state of Maharashtra on the appeal filed by Chopra, challenging the November 25, 2021 order of the Bombay High Court, which had declined her plea for anticipatory bail.

The Special Leave Petition (SLP) was filed by Chopra through her lawyer Sunil Fernandes.

The top court further said that no coercive action shall be taken against Chopra.

Earlier, the apex court had granted pre-arrest bail to Raj Kundra, businessman and husband of actor Shilpa Shetty, apart from model Poonam Pandey, in the same case.

Advocate Sunil Fernandes contended before the Top Court that the petitioner was aggrieved by the High Court order as it failed to provide proper reasoning for the sole ground for rejection of anticipatory bail – need of custodial interrogation.

Fernandes argued that Chopra was on ad-interim bail for almost nine months and there has not been a single instance, where she has tried to abuse the concession of ad-interim bail granted to her earlier.

The Supreme Court had earlier granted stay from arrest to Raj Kundra and Poonam Pandey in the porn video case.
