Shiv Sena (UBT) moves Supreme Court seeking direction to Maharashtra Speaker to take swift decision on disqualification of MLAs

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by Sunil Prabhu, an MLA from the Shiv Sena (UBT), seeking direction to the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly for decide the disqualification petitions against the rebel legislators led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expeditiously.

The Supreme Court on May 11,had asked the Maharashtra Assembly speaker (Rahul Narwekar) to decide the fate Shiv Sena MLAs, including Eknath Shinde, who were accused of anti-party activities.

Sunil Prabhu said that no step has been taken in this regard, inspite of Supreme Court in its May 11 judgment had asked the Speaker to decide the pending disqualification petitions within a reasonable period.

Prabhu added that he had already submitted three representations to the Speaker, but to no avail.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government that comprises of the Shiv Sena, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had collapsed after a revolt against Uddhav Thackeray by Eknath Shinde was put forth last year.

This led to a split in the Shiv Sena.Eknath Shinde became the Maharashtra Chief Minister with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.

A new petition was filed by Sunil Prabhu came after the NCP leader Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs, including Praful Patel and Chhagan Bhujbal, joined the Shinde-Fadnavis government in a surprising turn of events.

Ajit Pawar was offered the position of the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister that he accepted.

The NCP expelled five leaders, including senior party leader and Rajya Sabha member Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare, an MP.

The party also moved to formally disqualify Ajit Pawar and eight other MLAs who were sworn in as ministers in the Eknath Shinde cabinet on Sunday (July 2)
