Supreme Court grants anticipatory bail to assistant professor accused of promoting Hinduphobic books in Indore law college

An assistant professor of Indore’s New Government Law College has been granted anticipatory bail by the Suprmee Court in relation to a First Information Report (FIR) registered against him for promoting Hinduphobia and anti-India propaganda.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice AS Bopanna and Justic Dipankar datta granted anticipatory bail to Dr Mirza Moziz Beg.

Reports said in December, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which is the student wing of the Rashtriya Svayamsevak Sangh (RSS), started protesting against a “Hinduphobic” book in the library of the Shasakiya Navin Vidhi Mahavidyalaya (New Government Law College) in Indore.

As soon as the the allegations were cast, the Principal, Prof Inamur Rehman, had to resign and a police case was filed.

The matter involved books written by one Dr Farhat Khan titled ‘Collective Violence and Criminal Justice System’ and ‘Women and Criminal Law’.

The book ‘Women and Criminal Law’ examines treatment of women in Hindu society with the claim that Hindu women were instruments of lust fulfilment in a male-dominated world, and that scriptures revealed how they were subservient to men.

A tweet was posted by the State Higher Education Minister about the suspension of Prof Rehman and Assistant Prof Dr Mirza Beg with immediate effect. A first information report (FIR) was registered on the basis of a complaint by an LL.M. student at the college.

Dr Beg moved the Supreme Court through advocate Aljo K Joseph after his anticipatory bail application was rejected by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

He denied the charges against him, stating that the book was bought by the college in 2014, way before he joined on contract.

Dr Beg also informed the Court about how the book has always been a part of the Master’s curriculum for more than 18 years and was taught to all post graduates specializing in criminal law across Madhya Pradesh.
