Supreme Court designates 7 retired High Court chief justices/judges and 18 AoRs/advocates as Senior Advocates

The decision was taken at a meeting of the full Supreme Court. A letter has been addressed regarding the same by the secretary of the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates to the Registrar Generals of all High Courts, Secretary Bar Council of India, and Secretaries of all State Bar Councils.

The Supreme Court has designated seven former Chief Justices and Judges of High Courts and 18 Advocates-On-Record/Advocates as Senior Advocates, with effect from December 8.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the full Supreme Court. A letter has been addressed regarding the same by the secretary of the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates to the Registrar Generals of all High Courts, Secretary Bar Council of India, and Secretaries of all State Bar Councils.

According to the letter, under Section 16(2) of the Advocates Act, 1961 read with Rule 2(a) of Order IV, Supreme Court Rules, 2013 and Supreme Court Guidelines to Regulate Conferment of Designation of Senior Advocates, 2018 framed in terms of the Judgment dated October 12, 2017, passed in the case of Ms. Indira Jaising Vs. Supreme Court of India through Secretary-General and Ors. [(2017) 9 SCC 766], the Chief Justice of India and the Judges of the Supreme Court of India in the Full Court Meeting held on December 8, 2021, have designated 7 former Chief Justices/Judges of High Courts and 18 Advocates -on-Record/Advocates, as Senior Advocates, with effect from December 8.

1. The retired High Court Chief Justices/ judges designated as Senior are:

(i) Dr J.N. Bhatt (Gujarat/ Patna)

(ii) Surendra Kumar (Allahabad)

(iii) S.K. Gangele (Madhya Pradesh)

(iv) Vinod Prasad (Allahabad/ Orissa)

(v) L. Narasimha Reddy (Andhra Pradesh/ Patna)

(vi) A.I.S. Cheema (Bombay)

(vii) Noushad Ali (Andhra Pradesh)
