Supreme Court still indecisive about fate of quadricycles on Indian roads.

The petition filed by automotive engineers and autorickshaw drivers regarding safety of quadricycles, a Make In India vehicle in Rita Das Mozumdar vs. Union of India was heard in the court of Chief Justice of India and Justice UU Lalit.

Senior advocate Gopal Subramanian appeared for automotive engineers and submitted that the Tyagi committee appointed by the government was against approving quadricylce on the basis of frontal crash tests.

Senior advocate Aryaman Sundaram who appeared on behalf of auto drivers association submitted that since quadricycle can reach a speed of up to 50km/hour, and has not been approved after crash tests conducted in Europe, it cannot be allowed to ply on roads.

Mukul Rohatgi told the court that quadricycle will not run on highways, and was meant for congested roads.

Justice Thakur stated that there were no sitting measures to limit the quadricycle to congested roads only.

Matter listed for arguments on April 5.
