Appointment of five judges to Supreme Court notified by Central government

The appointment of five new judges to try Supreme Court has been notified by the Central government  

The five judges who have been appointed as the Supreme Court judges are:

– Justice Pankaj Mithal (currently Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court);

– Justice Sanjay Karol (currently Chief Justice of Patna High Court);

– Justice PV Sanjay Kumar (currently Chief Justice of Manipur High Court);

– Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah (currently Judge of Patna High Court);

– Justice Manoj Misra (currently Judge of Allahabad High Court).

The Supreme Court collegium in its meeting on December 13 had recommend the elevation of these five High Court judges to the Supreme Court.

After the five new judges join the working strength of the Supreme will go up to 33,which is almost full board with one vacancy. 

As for the High Court Judges who have been selected Justice Pankaj Mithal has been currently serving as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. He has oreviously, heled the designation as the  Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. Although his parent High Court is the Allahabad High Court.

About Justice Sanjay Karol,he is currently working as the  the Chief Justice of Patna High Court. He is former Chief Justice of Tripura High Court. The parent High Court of Justice Karol is the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Another prominent name in list is Justice PV Sanjay Kumar who is the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court. Prior to that he served as a judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court. His parent High Court is Telangana.

The fourth Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah is at present the Judge of the Patna High Court. He has served at the Andhra Pradesh High Court before being transferred back to Patna, his parent High Court.

Another judge who is now been elevated is Justice Manoj Misra is a judge at the Allahabad High Court. He was elevated as an additional Judge on November 21, 2011 and was made a permanent judge on August 6, 2013.

The Supreme Court had pulled up the Central government for delaying the appointments of the five judges, who were recommended in December 2022.

A Bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S Oka had given the Centre an ultimatum to process the appointments within ten days, after Attorney General N Venkataramani had submitted that they would be done soon.
