Delhi Commissioner of Police can arrest anyone under NSA till October 18: Delhi LG

Delhi Police said that this is a regular order and is issued normally. This order comes ahead of the Independence Day and at a time when farmers are organising a 'Kisan Sansad' at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi against three agricultural laws of the Centre.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has issued a notification that grants power to the Delhi Police Commissioner to apprehend anyone under the National Security Act (NSA) till October 18.

The notification, issued on July 22, Thursday, said, “Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub section (3) of section 3, read with clause (e) of Section 2 of the National Security Act, 1980, the Lt Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi is pleased to direct that during the period between July 19, 2021 to October 18, 2021, the Commissioner of Police, Delhi may also exercise the powers of detaining authority under sub section (2) of the section 3 of the aforesaid Act.”

This order comes ahead of the Independence Day and at a time when protesting farmers are organising a Kisan Sansad at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi against the three farm laws passed by Centre late last year.

Delhi Police said that this is a regular order and is issued normally. Under the NSA, officers can keep a person in preventive custody for months, if they feel the person is a threat to the security and law & order of the country.

Earlier this month, Commissioner of Delhi Police Balaji Srivastava had issued orders banning flying of paragliders and objects like hot air balloons.
