Delhi Police files chargesheet in Jahangirpuri violence case

The Delhi Police has filed the first chargesheet in the Jahangirpuri violence case of about 2,000 pages against 37 accused in Delhi’s Rohini court.

In the chargesheet, Delhi Police named 37 arrested accused in the case and besides them, two juveniles are also mentioned. The Rohini court has set July 28 for consideration of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police Crime Branch.

The Delhi Police has registered a case under IPC Sections 186, 353, 332, 323, 436, 109, 147, 148, 149, 307, 427, 120B, 34 and Arms Act. In this charge sheet, other sections including attempt to murder, rioting, assault, obstructing public work are included.

The investigation of the case was transferred to Crime Branch on April 18, 2022. A total 13 teams were deployed for verifying background details of accused persons, dump data, Technical (FRS) Analyses, viral video collections, CCTV footage collection arrest of accused persons, financial aspects and conspiracy angle etc.

Eight accused persons are absconding against whom proceedings under Section 82 of CrPC is underway.

A total of 9 firearms, 5 live cartridges, 2 empty cartridges, 9 swords and clothes of 11 accused persons worn at the time of incident and seen in videos have been recovered.

The CCTV footage of 28 cameras of PWD installed around Kusal Cinema Road, and 30 cameras of Public Work Department installed around C-Block, Jahangirpuri were obtained and analyzed.

Thirty viral videos and 56 videos from electronic media were collected and analyzed. Twenty of the 37 accused have been captured in CCTV footage/viral videos

Twenty-one mobile phones were seized from accused persons.

As per the investigation so far, the Delhi Police said the incident was a continuation of demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens in Shaheen Bagh in 2019 and 2020, as well as the rioting in Northeast Delhi in February 2020.

Clashes broke out between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on April 16, leaving eight police personnel and a local resident injured.
