Centre nominates Justice UU Lalit as NALSA Executive Chairman

NALSA was constituted in 1987 to promote an inclusive legal system that would ensure fair and meaningful justice to the poor and the marginalized.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday nominated Supreme Court judge Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

“In exercise of the powers conferred under Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the President is pleased to nominate Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, with immediate effect,” said the Notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on May 14.

NALSA was constituted in 1987 with a vision to promote an inclusive legal system in order to ensure fair and meaningful justice to the marginalized and disadvantaged by providing effective representation and awareness.

Chief Justice of India Justice N.V. Ramana was the NALSA Executive Chairman before the nomination of Justice Lalit. NALSA has the CJI as its patron-in-chief.
