Kolkata civic polls: Youth Congress workers file complaint in NHRC against West Bengal CM

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a case against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Commissioner of Police Kolkata on complaint registered by Youth Congress National Secretary Amrish Ranjan Pandey and Youth Congress National Co-Coordinator Ambuj Dixit against the Government of West Bengal’s alleged support to goons to wreak violence during the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections.

A Youth Congress press release sai elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Elections were held on December 19, 2021 wherein the ruling party Trinamool Congress indulged in large-scale violence against opposition parties. Several Congress Party candidates were beaten up by TMC goons.

The press release said the Ward 16 candidate was stripped naked in full public view. Similarly, Congress candidate and leaders were brutally beaten up in Ward 45 in the presence of several police officers. All this happened with the police department and state administration doing nothing to prevent the goons.

The press release said the NHRC will issue a notice to the accused parties and conduct investigation and further proceedings to protect human rights under law.
