UK’s top judge Lord Reed witnesses proceedings of Supreme Court

The President of the UK Supreme Court Lord Robert Reed attended the proceedings of the Supreme Court of India today. Lord Reed sat besides Chief Justice of India SA Bobde in the CJI’s courtroom.

Besides Chief Justice, Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant were also present to welcome the head of the judiciary of the United Kingdom.

Attorney General KK Venugopal welcomed the head of the judiciary of the UK in the courtroom.

Justice Reed had come to India to take part in the three-day International Judge’s Conference 2020 in the Supreme Court complex.

Scottish judge Lord Reed took over from Lady Hale as the president of the UK’s Supreme Court in January.

The 63-year-old, who was appointed as a justice of the Supreme Court in 2012, is the first Scottish president of the court since its creation 10 years ago.

In 2017, he was one of the three Supreme Court judges who dissented against the ruling in the Brexit case.

The ruling by all 11 justices ordered then Prime Minister Theresa May to seek parliament’s approval before she could trigger the Article 50 countdown to start the Brexit process leading to the UK’s departure from the EU.

But Lord Reed and two other justices said at the time that the legalisation of political issues was not always constitutionally appropriate.
