Parliament makes laws, how much can the courts do, asks CJI in same-sex marriages hearing

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Tuesday wondered how much can the courts do when Parliament has the power to pass laws on marriage and divorce. At the hearing seeking legalization of same-sex marriage, the CJI made the observation while replying to a petitioner who said the answer of the government is against the basic spirit of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court issued notice to the Delhi Police in the case of sexual harassment of women wrestlers. CJI Chandrachud said the allegations made by the wrestlers are serious and the case will be heard next on April 28.

A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has said unsealed arbitration agreement is not legally valid in an important decision on the arbitration agreement.

The Delhi High Court passed guidelines on PNDT Act in a hearing on abortion. It said the challenge is to eliminate gender discrimination and to ensure there is a safe womb for the female foetus.
