The Supreme Court on Monday took up the petition related to continuance of Section 66A of the Information Technology Act, despite the apex court’s 2019 order against the same.
A bench led by Justice R. F. Nariman started hearing in the plea filed by NGO People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) in the top court on July 30, alleging that despite the Court’s February, 2019 order, Section 66A of the Information Technology Act continues to be used in police stations as well as in trial courts across the country.
Senior Advocate Sanjay Parikh appeared for the petitioners, while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta represented the Central government.
Mr Mehta said, “The Union has filed its reply and the petitioners have filed the rejoinder yesterday only.”
The Bench said, “The state should be made parties, thereafter we will make a collective order. Issue notice to the State and all the Registrars of the High Court, so that a strong order can be passed in this matter.”
