Supreme Court quashes plea by Major General against jail term ordered by Secunderabad court in land dispute

The Supreme Court on Thursday quashed a petition filed by a Major General of the Indian Army and a Defence Estate Officer against the verdict of City Civil Court in Secunderabad, which sentenced them to two months in civil jail for disobedience in connection with a land dispute.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana observed that the work of the Army was to protect the country and not conduct such lawlessness.

After it came to know that the respondents in the plea were senior citizens, the bench told the Army officer, “These people are in their 70s and 80s. How do you think they can stand up to the might of the Army?”

The Apex Court had stayed the sentence of the accused on March 18, 2021.
