SC asks why a vision-impaired candidate, who has cleared entrance exam, will not be admitted to med college

The Supreme Court on Friday (June 15) asked the Centre to explain why a vision-impaired candidate, seeking admission to the BV Medical College in Ahmedabad to study MBBS was denied admission despite having cleared the entrance exam.

The vacation bench of Justices U U Lalit, Deepak Gupta also directed that the petitioner (a woman) be medically examined and the medical certificate should be submitted before the Supreme Court within 4 days.

This particular candidate has vision of up to 20m.

The matter was listed for next hearing to July 3 when the court reopens.

In 2017, the apex court had allowed admission of two colour-blind students in the MBBS course after the an expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court said that Colour Vision Deficiency nowadays was an ordinary problem and does not substantially effected a person’s ability to become a doctor.
