Delhi riots case: Ishrat Jahan says inmates beat her up in Mandoli jail

Former Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan on Tuesday said inmates in Mandoli jail had misbehaved with her and beaten her badly. She said this in court. Jahan had been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with the riots in North-East Delhi.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat directed jail authorities to take immediate steps to ensure her safety. The court asked the jail authorities to give a detailed report on Wednesday and explain what steps have been taken to resolve the issue and whether the inmate needs to be shifted to another jail.

The judge also directed the jail authorities to present Jahan in court on Wednesday through video conference. Jahan, while presenting the arguments directly in the court, said that this was the second incident within a month and she is under great stress due to constant physical and mental harassment.

Advocate Pradeep Tewatia, appearing for Jahan, alleged that she was also beaten up by inmates earlier, after which one of the prisoners was sent to another jail. Advocate Misbah bin Tariq, who was present during the hearing, requested the court to take immediate action and look into the situation.
