Supreme Court Collegium recommends elevation of Justice Sabina as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday recommended the appointment of Justice Sabina as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

She is presently the Acting Chief Justice of the same High Court.

Justice Sabina, whose parent High Court is the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was appointed as a High Court judge on March 12, 2008 and she is due to retire on April 19, 2023.

The Collegium in its statement released on the Supreme Court website said that two other senior judges – Justice Jaswant Singh and Justice Rajesh Bindal, hailing from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, have already been recommended for appointment to the Tripura High Court and the Supreme Court, respectively.

“The Collegium has, by its separate resolution, proposed the appointment of Justice Jaswant Singh, seniormost puisne Judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura. Justice Jaswant Singh is also due to retire on February 22, 2023. The Collegium has already proposed Justice Rajesh Bindal, the first in order of seniority among the judges from the High Court of Punjab and Haryana (presently Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad), for appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court,” the resolution said.

It further said that having regard to the seniority of Justice Sabina, the Collegium resolved to recommend that she be appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, as she was ‘fit’ and ‘suitable’ in all respects for the same.

Justice Sabina was born on April 20, 1961 and was unanimously selected as the Joint Secretary of Bar Association of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1986.

Thereafter, she joined as an Additional District Judge in 1997 and subsequently became the Sessions Judge in 2004. She was elevated as an Additional judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2008 and was made a permanent judge of the High Court in 2010.

In 2016, she was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court where she served as a judge for five years. Thereafter, in 2021, Justice Sabina took oath as judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Justice Sabina shall have a tenure of about two months before she retires as Chief Justice on April 19 this year.
