WhatsApp has filed a lawsuit against the Government of India in Delhi High Court seeking to block regulations of recently imposed IT rules that would require messaging service to trace the origin of a particular message sent on the service. The deadline to implement the new rules ended yesterday.

Messaging giant Whatsapp has defended its new privacy policy in the Delhi High Court, stating that the latest update will not affect the privacy of personal messages of users.

Senior Advocate Harish Salve appeared for WhatsApp, while Senior Advocate and former Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Mukul Rohatgi represented Facebook.

The Delhi High Court has revived its earlier circular allowing service of all documents, Notices, Summons and Daks to be effected through E-mail, Fax and WhatsApp till April 24.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday reserved its order on the petition filed by social media giants Facebook and WhatsApp challenging the Competition Commission of India (CCI) order directing investigation against the two over the new privacy policy of the messaging application.

Whatsapp announced an update to its privacy policy on January 2021 deepening its integration with Facebook especially in the realm of business messaging features.

In the social media privacy case, the Center requested the Delhi High Court said, WhatsApp should be stopped from implementing the new policy … Review of the proposed policy changes.

With WhatsApp and Twitter’s questionable policies, there is a likelihood of customers shifting to block chain technology. This is used in Bitcoins and could give better privacy protection due to its encryption technology.

The ASG said to the Court that the central government has taken a strong note of the New Privacy Policy of WhatsApp, which is giving differential treatment to its Indian users and is a cause of concern for the government.
