New Delhi (ILNS): A Public Interest Litigation has been placed before the Supreme Court, asking the apex court to take cognizance in the Hathras rape case.

Petitioner Shusma Maurya has demanded an inquiry of the case under the supervision of the High Court so that the accused do not escape.

Besides, the petition also seeks directions to the DGP, Commissioner of Police, and all police officials who were involved in the cremation of the deceased’s body without the permission and presence of the family of the victim. The body of the 19-year-old woman was cremated without following any religious rituals in a hurried manner.

The petitioner has also sought directions for setting up adequate institutional mechanisms and guidelines so that no other victim or their family members feel lost regarding the law and order situation.

On Thursday, the Allahabad High Court had taken suo moto cognizance of the Hathras incident and the events leading to the cremation of the victim in the alleged rape and murder case and issues notices to the state government.

On Wednesday a PIL was filed in the apex court seeking an investigation by the CBI into the case. The appeal sought direction to transfer the case from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi.

A 19-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped in Hathras on September 14 and succumbed to her injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday.
