Sharjeel Imam sedition case: Delhi court orders framing sedition charges against JNU student

A Delhi court on Monday ordered the framing of sedition charges against Jawaharlal Nehru University student Sharjeel Imam for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Milia Islamia pertaining to the Citizenshp Amendment Act (CAA).

Karkardooma Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat framed the charges.

Imam has been booked under Sections 124A (sedition), 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, etc), 153B (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration), 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 13 (UAPA), in connection with the Northeast Delhi riots.

In 2020, an FIR was lodged against Sharjeel Imam for allegedly making inflammatory speeches against the CAA in AMU and Jamia area of Delhi.

The Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against Imam in the case, in which it alleged that he allegedly gave speeches inciting hatred, contempt, and disaffection  which led to the violence in December 2019.

Imam was arrested from Jehanabad, Bihar on January 28, 2020. On November 27, Imam was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court in connection with another case filed against him for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at the Aligarh Muslim University in January 2019.
