Uttarakhand High Court directs District Magistrate, Nainital to submit report on block development representatives not given representation in Block Development Council committees

The Uttarakhand High Court has directed the District Magistrate of Nainital to look into the matter and file a report regarding the elected representatives from certain Block Development Constituencies not being given representation in the Committees constituted by the Block Development Council.

The allegation in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is that certain Block Development Constituencies are being subjected to step-motherly treatment in the matter of allocation of funds for execution of development work.

Sanjay Bhatt, Counsel for the petitioners, contended that the elected representatives from certain Block Development Constituencies are not being given representation in the Committees constituted by the Block Development Council. This, according to the Petitioners, is adversely affecting the persons residing in those constituencies which are unrepresented in the Committees.

The Division Bench, comprising Justices Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Alok Kumar Verma, while considering the PIL on August 18, observed that Betalghat Block is one of the most backward regions in Nainital district, therefore, the issue raised appears to be of vital public interest.
