Supreme Court decides to hear bail plea of activist Umar Khalid on July 24 in Delhi riots case

The Supreme Court has said that it would be hearing the bail plea by activist Umar Khalid on July 24 in connection with the Delhi Riots conspiracy case.

The Bench was asked by the Delhi Counsel for changing the date citing concerns about the heavy workload typically associated with Mondays.

The Bench comprising of Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh said that they will decide whether the day is heavy or not..and the matter will take 1 or 2 minutes only.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal who appeared for Khalid, said that Khalid is inside jail for over two years now and what reply is needed in a bail case now?

The Delhi Police was represented by Advocate Rajat Nair who said that charge sheets run in thousands of pages…and they need reasonable time to file a reply.

The Court was hearing the bail plea filed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student in connection with the Delhi Riots conspiracy case.

Khalid was arrested by the Delhi Police in September 2020 and charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly as well as several sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He has remained in jail since then.

The top court was approached by Khalid against an order by Delhi High Court judgment that had denied bail to him.

The arguments in the High Court had gone on for more than 20 days.

Khalid had also been approached by the High Court challenging the dismissal of his bail application by the Karkardooma court in March 2022.

The apex court had in May this year issued notice to the Delhi Police on the bail plea.

Khalid moved the top court challenging an October 2022 Delhi High Court judgment that had denied bail to him.

The arguments in the High Court had gone on for more than 20 days.

Khalid had previously approached the High Court challenging the dismissal of his bail application by the Karkardooma court in March 2022.
