The Madras High Court on Tuesday asked the Tamil Nadu Government to issue instructions to all hotels, restaurants, bakeries, groceries and all types of food packaging industries to educate its employees not to touch their tongues to separate covers and not to blow into them to enlarge them when packing food items.

According to the public interest litigation, the usual practice of employees at hotels, restaurants, bakeries, groceries, and food packaging industries seeking to separate paper or open covers by either touching their fingers to the tongue or by blowing into the covers could be a reason for spreading the pandemic as the virus could travel into the cover and may affect the contents of the cover was put forward.

The division bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthil Kumar Ramamoorthy said, “The State should take note of the suggestion and create awareness or issue instructions to all businesses where such practice may be in vogue to encourage the management to educate the employees so that they refrain from continuing with the practice in the concerned petition.”
