It is vital for any country governed by the rule of law that its judges decide cases solely on the evidence presented by parties and law. Judicial accountability vanishes when a judge travels beyond the case and makes unnecessary remarks in his decisions. This would set a precarious precedent and is undesirable.

The Supreme Court on Saturday allowed the applications of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Allahabad High Court to transfer of judicial officers/sessions court judges who are dealing with cases of prosecution of MPs or MLAs to other suitable posts.

The Supreme Court Collegium in the same meeting has resolved to reiterate its earlier recommendations for elevation of the 4 Advocates (Shri Jaytosh Majumdar, Shri Amitesh Banerjee, Shri Raja Basu Chowdhury, Smt. Lapita Banerji) as Judges in Calcutta High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana, has recommended 68 names, including 44 advocates and 24 judicial officers, for appointment as judges in 12 High Courts of the country.
